When you are making travel arrangements, please note that most of the university buildings are open and fully staffed Monday to Friday between 8/9am and 4pm. 


How to get from Helsinki to Joensuu and Kuopio?

As there are no direct international flights to Joensuu and Kuopio, it is recommended to book your flight to Helsinki (Helsinki-Vantaa airport). There are several daily domestic flights from Helsinki to Joensuu and Kuopio.  There are also excellent coach and railway connections from Helsinki to the campus cities.

By train
There is a frequent train connection from Helsinki airport to the centre of Helsinki. You can conveniently take the train from airport and change to a long-distance train at Tikkurila Station.  For further info, see here.

By coach
There are some direct coach connection departing from Helsinki airport to Kuopio. Coach connections to Joensuu leave from the centre of Helsinki. For timetable and online tickets, please see

Transport connections from Joensuu and Kuopio airports

Airports in Joensuu and Kuopio are located 10-15 kilometres from the city centre. Please see the websites of the airports for more information on transport connections to/from the airport. Taking the airport taxi is cheaper than a regular taxi because you share the ride with other people going to the same direction (Joensuu appr. 15-20€/person and Kuopio 25€/person). Book the airport taxi three hours prior to your arrival in Joensuu/Kuopio or look for a taxi driver with an airport taxi sign
