In my present project I am researching on the images and representations of the Karelian region in Finnish literature. The main focus hereby lies on the first half of the twentieth century, especially the period shortly before and after World War II until the 1950ies. On both sides of the Finnish-Soviet border, in Finland and in Soviet Karelia, Finnish writers in their works used traditional pictures and created new ones of the Karelian region – with different cultural and political implications and background. I want to investigate on their differences and similarities also in comparison to other border regions (e.g. Poland/Germany) as a broader context.
