Sensory Transformations and Transgenerational Environmental Relationships in Europe 1950–2020 research project

Were you born between 1930 and 1949 and lived or spent time in Brighton in the 1950s and 1960s or were you born between 1990 and 2005 and lived or spent time in Brighton? If so, we would like to invite you to take part in our sensory walks in Brighton.

Our research seeks to produce new understandings on how different generations relate to and experience their environment, particularly in relation to technology.

The data collected in Brighton will be compared to data collected in two other European cities: Ljubljana in Slovenia and Turku in Finland. The research in Brighton is being co-ordinated by Lesley Murray, University of Brighton. The overall leader of the project is Helmi Järviluoma from the University of Eastern Finland.

In this project, you will be asked to do four things:

  1. Participate in two walks with a person from a different generation – and with the researchers –  one of your own choosing (a journey that is somehow special to you) and a second walk of their choosing. Each of the walks will take about 45-60 minutes.
  2. Talk about your experiences and sensations during the walk.
  3. VIdeo the walk with a video camera attached to your clothing.
  4. Take part in a short interview (10-15 minutes) after the walks. After the walk you may be asked to take part in another interview. Every third couple is asked to join to a deep interview that will take approximately 1.5 hours.

There are no right or wrong way to do your walk and answer our questions; we are interested in your observations, your feelings and your story. We hope to create an open and warm reciprocal encounter, where you can feel comfortable. The discussion will be audio and/or videotaped depending on your agreement. However, we will not identify you by name in any reports that uses information obtained from this interview. Your confidentiality as a participant in this study will remain secure. Privacy and confidentiality in personal data collection and processing are in accordance with EU legislation (Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council  of 24 October 1995 on the protection of individuals with regard to processing of personal data and on the free movement od such data) and are kept private. The research data we collect will be culturally and historically significant and therefore valuable for future research –  the data will therefore be archived. During the research data will be saved in the EUDAT data bank (https://eudat.eu), and after that in a safe research data storage. The consent forms will be archived as a specified and  accurately protected file format and will be saved into to a secure national data service.

All the travel expenses are paid by the project. This study is funded by European Research Council, which is supporting the costs of this research.
