In May-June 2018, Leyla Sayfutdinova spent 4 weeks in Baku, Azerbaijan. The aim of the visit was to collect materials on the coverage of Lezgi national movement that erupted in Azerbaijan and Dagestan following the transformation of the Russian-Azerbaijani border from an interrepublican to interstate border in 1992. Leyla worked in the National Library where she collected newspaper articles covering the activities of the movement and Azerbaijani state reaction to them from three major newspapers. In addition, Leyla held some meetings and discussed possible future cooperation with Khazar University.
