I have been working in biogeochemistry research group since 1995, currently in a tenure track position (university researcher 2012-2015, associate professor 2015-2020). I completed my PhD in 2003 (Greenhouse gas dynamics of farmed or forested organic soils in Finland) and I have been working as a principal researcher in several national and international projects related to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from peatlands, agricultural and forest soils: e.g. in my Academy post doc project (2005-2008) I studied N2O emissions at low temperature and the effect of snow cover. I worked as a post-doc researcher also at Agricultural University of Iceland in 2008 and wrote a review about GHG emissions form managed northern organic soils. I have been working in Iceland also in FORHOT project, GHG measurements at a natural warming gradient on volcanic soils (, which are really unique and fascinating study sites! In 2012 we started in biogeochemistry group a new research topic “HONO (nitrous acid) emissions from northern soils” and in May 2016 I got finally funding for this project from the Academy of Finland. In this project we will measure HONO emissions in the field and in the laboratory and use isotopic applications (13C, 15N) as well as microbiological methods to understand the production mechanisms of still rather unknown HONO gas. In CARBO-NURMI project (2019-2021 funding from Business Finland) with LUKE we are measuring carbon balance from grasslands and studying how different agricultural practices can help carbon sequestration in soil.

My research interests have been:

  1. GHG fluxes and biogeochemical cycles in drained or disturbed peatlands
  2. GHG fluxes from agricultural and forest soils under different management (e.g. manure, N or ash fertilization)
  3. GHG fluxes from geothermal areas
  4. Nitrous oxide dynamics at low soil temperatures
  5. HONO (nitrous acid) emissions and production mechanisms in boreal soils
