Learning outcomes: After completing the course, the student

  • has acquired tools for dialogue on environmental questions
  • recognizes different approaches to climate change in social and religious contexts
  • is aware of the challenges that climate change causes to human mind and spiritual life
  • has gained experience in spiritual and pastoral responses to climate anxiety
  • has gained experience in practical creation care in the context of Finnish local churches

Content: The curriculum focuses on climate change as a challenge not only to the physical world but, increasingly, to human morality, integrity, and spirituality. It takes a research-based, constructive approach to the ongoing crisis by recognizing and explaining different psychological reactions to change, such as fear and anxiety, and by looking for spiritual and pastoral answers in different religious traditions. It addresses the individual’s role and possibilities in raising climate awareness and taking action. During the course, the student learns from different responses to climate change (such as climate strategies) in the context of Finnish local churches and religious communities. The course includes an excursion to local Orthodox monasteries where the student gains hands-on experience of an ascetic, sustainable way of life. The course is organized in cooperation with the Summer School organized by Environmental Policy at Department of Geographical and Historical Studies.

Modes of study: Before arrival (2 weeks): preliminary, web-based assignments (Moodle environment)

During the summer school: lectures, workshops, excursion, individual and group assignments, learning diary

After departure: completing the assignments and learning diary, self-assessment, feedback

Study materials: All materials will be distributed in the Moodle environment and during lectures.
Evaluation criteria: Active participation in the lectures and workshops (pass / fail), individual and group assignments, learning diary (0–5)
