Tarja is an analytical chemist developing analytical methods and choosing right tools for different purposes. Tarja defended her PhD thesis on analytical methods for phytoestrogens in human samples in May 2004. She continued her research work in the postdoctoral project of the Academy of Finland, and studied whether metabolism of polyphenols would tell us something about their possible health effects.
Since 2011 she has been running research laboratory and supervised study nurses in vitamin D studies. 2013 Tarja published a method for 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and applied it for thousands of samples for example in the FIND, KIHD, VitDMet and VitDbol studies. The FIND study is on-going, and more analytical measurements are carried out in the future.
One recent research project she is participating is TERLA (Impacts of Terrestrial Organic Matter Loading on Lake Food Webs and Human Health - Challenges for Environmental Regulation) funded by the Academy of Finland. In Terla is studied whether the differences in quality of eaten fish can be observed in markers such as for example fatty acids, vitamin D and mercury measured in human.
