In middle-aged and older men from the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study (KIHD), higher protein intake was associated with a small increase in the risk of developing heart failure: http://circheartfailure.ahajournals.org/content/11/6/e004531 (open access).

Maija Ylilauri, MSc, clinical nutritionist (in 2019) has started her PhD research in our group. Maija is investigating the impact of dietary factors on the development of dementia and other memory disorders. Her first paper about egg and cholesterol intakes and risk of incident dementia was published in 2017 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Billion people have high blood pressure, mostly in poorer countries. The number of people with high blood pressure has almost doubled in 40 years to more than 1.1 billion worldwide, scientists have said, with the burden of the condition shifting from the rich to the poor. In the largest study of its kind analysing blood pressure in every nation between 1975 and 2015, the scientists say it has dropped sharply in wealthy countries – possibly due to healthier diets and lifestyles – but risen in poorer ones. Led by World Health Organisation researchers working with hundreds of scientists internationally, this study covered blood pressure measurements from nearly 20 million people and was published in the Lancet.

Jyrki was the opponent for Alice Wallin’s doctoral dissertation (Fish consumption in relation to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular complications) in Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.
Terla fish intake study data is put together for the final data analyses. Soon we will know whether we can observe e.g. from serum fatty acids and blood mercury where the fish eaters mainly catch their fishes.

Tomi-Pekka, Tarja and Heli participated the annual meeting of AKVA-program in Tuusula, Finland and presented the preliminary results of Terla fish intake study.
MSc, RD Heli Virtanen is starting as a doctoral student in our group. Heli is studying in her doctoral thesis associations between dietary protein and protein sources and risk of CVD and type 2 diabetes.
FIND-study 4rd year is starting.
PhD, Associate Professor of Epidemiology Elizabeth Bertone-Johnson from University of Massachusetts, Amherst, is visiting us until January 2016.
Anu had a post-doctoral research visit in Deakin University, Australia, where she continued her post-doctoral studies related to dietary interventions in patients with depression as a member of Associate Professor Felice Jacka’s research group.
