Jaska's oral presentation was Glycemic Load, Glycemic Index and the Risk of Acute Myocardial Infarction in Middle-Aged Finnish Men. Jyrki's presentation was Serum Long-Chain n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Risk of Atrial Fibrillation in Men.

Anu was accepted to Finnish Graduate School of Psychiatry. She is the first nutritionist ever to be part in this graduate school. Interdisciplinary is the word of the day. Congratulations!

Anna Nurmi succesfully defended her doctoral thesis Health from Herbs? Antioxidant Studies on Selected Lamiaceae Herbs in vitro and in Humans. Her thesis was done in collaboration with University of Helsinki, Faculty of Pharmacy, Division of Pharmaceutical Biology and our Research Institute.

Congratulations and thanks for a very nice Thai-style doctoral party!



Jyrki will be back from his 2.5 year visit to Harvard, Boston, USA. At the same time he will start his 3-year Academy Fellow post.

Jaakko, Tarja, Anna and Sari will attend 3rd International Conference on Polyphenols and Health (ICPH2007) and the International Conference on Food Factors for Health Promotion (ICOFF2007), in Kyoto, Japan. During the conferences are also The 3rd of International Food Ingredients & Additives Exhibition and Health Food Exposition with 180 exhibitors, 200 booths and 10,000 attendees.

















Our letter Coffee intake and the incidence of hypertension was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Assistant Professor Anna Christina Pinheiro Fernandes from University of Chile was visiting our Institute. She was practising analytical methods for lignans as part of her PhD studies and studying association of enterolactone with other CHD risk factors in the kIHD Study. We started good and hopefully long-lasting collaboration together and had also very nice social events together.

Jaska defended his doctoral thesis The role of polyphenols in cardiovascular diseases (Ravinnon flavonoidien merkitys sydän- ja verisuonitaudeissa). Congratulations! Professor Antti Aro from National Health Institute, Helsinki was the opponent and Sari the custodian.








Jaska's latest publication The intake of flavonoids and carotid atherosclerosis: the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study was published in the British Journal of Nutrition 2007;98:814-8.

Tarja gave a presentation in NJF seminar on Beneficial health substances from berries and minor crops. Tarja's presentation Absorption and metabolism of berry polyphenols. Later this year you can meet Tarja in June at the International Conference on Lignans, Alkylresorcinols and Health.

Our letter about risks and benefits of fish intake was published in JAMA 2007;297:585-6.








The biggest perch caught by Jyrki (1160 g, 45 cm). Back then he didn't know about the possible high mercury content in these large predatory fish, so he ate it...



Voutilainen Sari et al: Functional COMT Val158Met Polymorphism, Risk of Acute Coronary Events and Serum Homocysteine: The Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study was published in PLoS ONE.

Jaska gave a lecture about health effects of chocolate in release of the Reader's Digest's new book Syö itsesi terveeksi.

Tarja's three years postdoctoral research project funded by the Academy of Finland started. Topic of the project is Role of dietary phenolic compounds and their metabolites in human: health promoters or xenobiotics?



Jaska received considerable funding, also other than by selling his car to Tarja, for his post doctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota, Mineapolis, USA. He studies there health effects of carbohydrates in the group of Professor David Jacobs till the end of year 2011.
