Respiratory Medicine

Respiratory Medicine is the discipline concerned with several types of pulmonary and respiratory diseases including common diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), sleep-apnea, respiratory infections, respiratory insufficiency, lung cancer as well as more uncommon disorders like pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary tuberculosis, systemic diseases and various interstitial lung diseases. Thus, the department provides instruction about many very different types of diseases from allergic and autoimmune diseases to malignant as well as infectious diseases.

The University of Eastern Finland in collaboration with the Department of Respiratory Medicine at the Kuopio University Hospital organizes undergraduate and postgraduate training in respiratory medicine.The undergraduate program comprises of lectures, bed-side teaching in small groups both in ward and out-patient clinic and seminars provided during the 3rd and 4th academic year. In addition, regional, national and international continuing medical education is actively pursued.

The training of residents in respiratory medicine is organized in the Kuopio University Hospital.

The research of respiratory medicine is focused on alteration of lung cells in severe lung diseases. The clinical information of the patients is compared with the cell changes. The main interests of the clinical scientists are lung cancer, different types of pulmonary fibroses and COPD in lung cancer patients.

The teaching staff is composed of a professor, a clinical lecturers and teaching nurses.
