Mendeley is a reference management system and an academic social networking tool produced by Elsevier. Like RefWorks and other similar programs, Mendeley helps you to manage references and generate bibliographies. Mendeley also offers means for enhancing the visibility and impact of your research. You may create your own profile page, share your list of publications, find and follow other researchers as well as join interesting groups.

Mendeley is available as a free of charge version and as a chargeable version. The free version provides you with 2 GB of web storage space. The chargeable version is not available at the University of Eastern Finland.

You have to create your own personal account in order to use Mendeley:

Mendeley can be used either via a desktop interface or via a browser interface. Mendeley consists of three programs:

  1. Mendeley Desktop is a user interface installed to your desktop for managing references. You may download the Mendeley Desktop from UEF Software Center within the UEF campus network.
  2. Web Importer installed to browser enables importing references and full articles from several databases to Mendeley library online easily.
  3. Word Plugin is an add-on utility program you install to your word processor (Word or LibreOffice). The plugin is needed for adding references and bibliographies to texts. Please note that the plugin is not compatible with Word Online (Office 365 Word).
