Mouse and rat anaesthesia

1) "Käyttöliuos"
 Hypnorm® (fentanylsitraat 0,315mg/ml, fluanison 10mg/ml)
     + Dormicum® (midazolam 5mg/ml)

Dilute Hypnorm® with sterile water: 1 part Hypnorm® + 1 part water
Dilute Dormicum® with sterile water: 1 part Dormicum® + 1 part water
Mix dilutions together: 1 part each
Storage:  1 week in room temperature

Dose completed "Käyttöliuos": 
Mouse: 0,05 - 0,1ml/10g sc

Rat: 0,2 - 0,27ml/100g sc

Surgical anaesthesia lasts about  30-40 minutes. If it is necessary to continue the anaesthesia, inject approx. half of the original dose. 

2) Domitor® (medetomidine 1mg/ml) + Ketalar®/Ketaminol® (ketamine 50mg/ml)

Mouse: 1,0 mg/kg medetomidine, 75 mg/kg ketamine

Dilute 1 part Domitor®, 1,5 parts Ketalar®/Ketaminol® and 2,5 parts sterile water or NaCl
Dose completed solution:
0,05 ml/10g sc, ip

Rat: 0,4 mg/kg medetomidine, 60mg/kg ketamine

Dilute 1 part Domitor®, 3 parts Ketalar®/Ketaminol® and 1 part sterile water or NaCl
Dose completed solution:
0,2 ml/100g sc, ip

Surgical anaesthesia lasts 20-30 minutes.

Note, that medetomidine  can hinder blood sampling from periferal veins. Medetomidine also increases urine secretion, which has to be taken into account when estimating fluid demand. 

3) Inhalation anaesthesia

Anaesthesia is induced in a small chamber. After the animals has fallen asleep, anaesthesia is maintained with a mask or intubation tube. Animals can also firts be anesthetized with injectable anaesthetic and then be maintained with inhalation.  Inhalation anaesthesia is very safe for the animals and it is the recommended option in long surgeries. Inhalation anaesthetics are not analgetics, so pain relief must be separately taken care of, e.g. by giving buprenorfin and/or carprofen before surgery. Mediating gas can be pure oxygen. Other anaesthetics and opioids from analgetics can decrease the amounth of inhalation anaesthetic needed. When ending the inhalation anaesthesia, it is good to let the animal breath pure oxygen when waking up.  

Induction: 3% - 4%

Has antagonistic effect on sedative effect of opioids, removes also analgetic effect.
