I work as a professor in Special Education in the Faculty of Philosophy, School of Educational Sciences and Psychology, University of Eastern Finland. I hold both Classroom Teacher (1978, University of Oulu) and a Special Education Teacher (1980, University of Joensuu) certificates and I earned my Ph.D. degree, major in Special Education at Syracuse University, New York, U.S.A. in 1993. During my carrier I have worked in several international development and research projects and conducted multidisciplinary research with researcher from several fields of science (e.g. linguistics, psychology, nursing science, computer science). My research interests have been particularly in communication and interaction of individuals with severe developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorders and technology for individuals with special needs.
